Google's Mobilegeddon Update Could Alter Search Forever

April 22, 2015

While Google constantly tweaks its search algorithm in an effort to provide the best results to users of its search engine, major updates are actually very rare. However, Google's latest major update has been dubbed Mobilegeddon, could drastically alter search results on smartphones and tablets.

What Is Mobilegeddon?

Google's new algorithm update is one of the biggest updates Google has made in recent years to its search algorithm and is designed specifically for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Essentially, sites that are created with these devices in mind will begin to perform better in Google search ranking higher than sites that aren't considered mobile friendly.

Impact of Google's Mobile Friendly Update

While the final results have yet to be seen, some industry experts are predicting that these changes could considerably alter what sites rank higher on mobile devices. Some have even predicted that this change could even affect more than 40% of the websites owned by Fortune 500 companies, and that doesn't even begin to address what will happen to all of the smaller sites that populate the Internet. One thing is clear, if your site is not mobile friendly, you will start to rank lower in the search results on mobile devices while you will probably see little change on desktop searches as Google is not changing how it ranks those results.

Tips to Prepare Your Site

All is not lost, however, as there are several things you can do to rework your site for this new mobile friendly update.

1. Understand where you are and where you need to go.

Take a look at your site and determine what you need to do to make it mobile friendly. Use Google's tool (https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/) to help you understand what steps you need to take and then implement them on your site.

2. Understand your audience.

Don't follow Google's advice blindly. Remember, it all comes down to your audience. Look at your statistics and determine what platforms your users use when accessing your site. Use this information as a guide for you to implement the changes recommended by Google.

3. Focus on your content.

As always, keep focusing on creating high quality content that your readers want. Spend time on each headline for your article to make it catchy and notable. In each article, be concise and make it easy for readers to consume on both a desktop and a mobile site.

With these changes from Google websites could see a major shift in traffic from mobile devices. If your site isn't ready, you could be looking at a potentially large drop in your traffic that could negatively impact the revenues you earn from your website.
