The Internet marketing industry uses terminology that can be confusing to newcomers.Adeo Intrenet Marketing has developed a glossary of terms to help guide you.


Ad Clicks
Number of times users click on an ad or banner ad.

Algorithm
The process a search engine (Google, Bing) applies to web pages so it can accurately produce a list of results based on a search term. Search engines regularly change their algorithms to improve the quality of the search results. Hence search engine optimization tends to require constant research and monitoring to keep your ranking.


ASP

Active Server Pages (.asp) make use of special code on Microsoft web servers to create web pages. Generally used in large e-commerce websites.

Back Link
The definition of back link is a link from another website that points to your own website. Back links are also known as inbound links, and they make up a website's link popularity.

Bot
Derived from the word "robot," a bot is a software program that performs repetitive functions, such as indexing information on the Internet.

Content (web content)
This could be words, pictures, images or sounds. In essence however, when we talk about web content, we are essentially referring to content in a textual nature. Content therefore is the 'information' in text form a web site provides.

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) 
A simple mechanism for adding style (e.g. fonts, colors, spacing) to Web documents. Not all browsers implement the full specification of CSS.

Database
A data software file, containing many records, each of which contains the same set of fields, where each field contains a specific type of information.

Domain Name 
An unique name that identifies one or more IP addresses. Domain names are used in URLs' to identify particular Web sites. Every web site is located by its unique IP address.

Download
Transferring data (usually as a file) from one computer to another computer you are are using. The opposite of upload.

E-commerce (Electronic Commerce)
Conducting business online, including product display, online ordering, secure transactions and inventory management.

Email
Electronic Mail - Messages, usually text, sent from one person to another via computer. E-mail can also be sent automatically to a large number of addresses. You can also send files with e-mail.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs are documents that list and answer the most common questions on a particular subject.  FAQs are usually written by people who are tired of answering the same question over and over.

FTP [File Transfer Protocol]
One of the most common methods of transferring files over the Internet. A typical method used for uploading files (pages) to a hosting server for viewing on the Internet.

GUI
It is pronounced "GOOEY". Abbreviation for "Graphical User Interface".

HyperText Markup Language (HTML)
The markup language that is used on most of the World Wide Web to create web pages. The standards for HTML are controlled by the W3C.

IP (Internet Protocol)
The protocol that governs how computers send packets across the Internet.

PageRank
PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important".

Search Engine
Computer program used to search and catalog (index) the millions of pages of available information on the web. Common search engines are Google and Bing.

SPAM
Although SPAM is technically something else, it usually refers to unsolicited e-mail. Unsolicited e-mail is any email message received where the recipient did not specifically ask for it.

W3/ W3C
World Wide Web Consortium. The W3C, or World Wide Web Consortium, is a standards body dedicated to ensuring interoperability between all the varied system and network types that comprise the World Wide Web part of the Internet. The W3C log format is commonly used by several web server software systems, such as Microsoft IIS.

Webmaster
The individual assigned to administering a corporation or organization's web site. This person lays out the information trees, designs the look, codes HTML pages, handles editing and additions and checks that links are intact. In addition, he or she monitors, routes and sometimes responds to email generated by the site

WYSIWYG
What you see is what you get. A type of editor used for creating web pages.

SQL
An ANSI standard computer language for accessing and manipulating databases.

ZIP
Zip is a compressed file format for windows operating systems. (Zip-It)
