Search engine optimization techniques

Most search engine optimization techniques revolve around link building strategies since acquiring trusted and authoritative back-links are an essential part of the ranking algorithm. However, before you can launch your ongoing link building campaign, you need quality content on your site so that other sites have good reason to link to you. Create good content and search engines will reward you.

  • Blogging

Every site should actively maintain a blog on their website. How formal or informal it is depends on the corporate culture. But what is important is that it publishes interesting and timely information for your audience. Invite user participation through your comments section, and address (don't suppress) negative comments. Be sure to link to fresh pages on external sites to demonstrate your relevance and timeliness.

The benefits are fourfold. First, every page on your site becomes an internal back-link and counts towards the total count. Second, your site stays fresh and active which is an important algorithm signal. Third, if you stay on topic, your overall site theme is strengthened and your site is considered more relevant. Finally, search engines monitor user metrics and factor that into the algorithm also.

  • Guest blogging

Once you've established yourself as a credible writer, you can approach other sites within your topical hub and request the opportunity to write and article for them. Cite yourself as author and your website URL as a source of additional information. Many sites invite guest bloggers; you just need to network.

  • Article submission

Similar to guest blogging, there are a number of general syndicated article sites to which you can submit original content. The process is usually largely automated, and after a few articles have been accepted, the link to your site will count as a back-link (typically your first few articles will be marked "nofollow", which don't really count as a backlink).

  • Link baiting

This is ultimate back-linking technique. It is difficult to achive, but very rewarding. The goal is not to actively solicit back-link opportunities, but to create compelling content that will be garner attention on social bookmarking sites and attract links naturally. From there, other bloggers do their own commentary about your content and cite your article as a reference.

  • Quality exchanges

The dreaded link exchange is becoming increasingly outdated every day, however trading with quality relavent websites can still be enough to rank on less competitive search terms.

  • Participation

Just post your link everywhere you can! Participating in forums, create profile pages on social networks and comment on other blogs; these are all opportunities to get back-links. Not all of them count for SEO purposes, and you shouldn't make spam post just for the link, but genuine participation can get some additional exposure.

Search engines are in the business of compiling and recommending quality content. It should come as no surprise that many of the techniques required to achieve your goals demand quality written articles. Add value to the Internet through useful information, and success will follow.
